The Tairona Heritage Trust is not simply a financial support for the indigenous people of the Sierra.  It is also a way of showing them that we are capable of respecting them and their message - and, by extension, life itself.  They believe that at the heart of our destructive behaviour is a failure to respect anything beyond our own immediate needs.  So the Trust exists as part of the effort to change us, as well as to help them.
Money is only ever sent to Colombia in support of projects explicitly proposed by Gonavindua Tairona, the organisation that represents the Mamas.  These projects are for buildings and land-purchase, and whatever is bought becomes the legal property of the indigenous community itself, not of any individual or sub-group.
